Drink Beer, and help PSU students headed to Uganda!
As some of you know, my wife, Jessica, is part of a Portland State University student group heading to Uganda next week as part of a three-week field seminar studying International Community Development. And, as you may imagine, the cost of travel, tuition, and immunizations isn’t cheap. So before the group departs, they’re holding one last fundraising event – which doubles as a bon voyage party – at the newly opened Breakside Brewery in North Portland.
With the support of some generous local breweries, Scott Lawrence, one of Breakside’s owners, has agreed to open early on Saturday with some great beers on tap. Stop by between noon and 3:oopm, grab a pint (or two) and support the PSU student group as they prepare for this amazing opportunity. Featured beers will include:
- Full Sail LTD 03
- Widmer Brothers Drifter Pale Ale
- Bridgeport Brewery IPA
- Deschutes Brewery Hop in the Dark, and
- Hopworks (beer TBD)
As if good beer wasn’t enough, some other local businesses have donated some great raffle prizes as well. This is the group’s last chance to raise money before their departure – please bring your thirsty friends and show your support for a great cause. We really appreciate it!

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
On June 19th, five PSU community development students and two professors will begin a three week exploration of communities in Uganda. The seminar will begin in Entebbe, Uganda. From there, the group will travel to Jinja, and make a loop through south Uganda, returning to Entebbe on July 10th.
This trip will allow students to explore various aspects of sustainable international development in a country most would not otherwise have the opportunity to visit. The program will focus on three facets:
- Social equity- including the issues of HIV/AIDS, human rights, gender, education, and government
- Environmental sustainability -including the challenges of natural resource and wildlife conservation
- Sustainable economy – with a focus on fisheries management, agricultural development and creative local businesses like Bead for Life, which is a group of Ugandan women are supporting themselves and their community by making and selling colorful paper beads.
While in Uganda, the student group will attend lectures by local NGO’s, visit various communities, stay with families along their route, and perhaps most importantly, observe how the three points outlined above contribute to the overall sustainability of the communities they visit.
More info and updates during their trip will be available on the group's blog here: http://psu1uganda.wordpress.com/
We hope to see you Saturday!
